The new W123 model was launched in January 1976, being larger than its predecessor with updated styling, yet showing some cues to the previous W115 model. All models received a mild facelift in 1982, with rectangular headlights and power steering across the range. The first factory-built estate car, the 280 TE, made its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1977. Special features of the estate version included a strengthened rear chassis and tailgate, and hydraulic self-levelling rear suspension. The ultimate classic load lugger, the TE is as revered today as when it was new.
This impressive and unique 1982 280TE has been extensively restored and modified into a genuine Street Sleeper. As a basis the original shell was rebuilt with new floors and sills, soundproofed and treated with two-pack stone chip paint underneath.
The original 2.8 litre petrol engine was removed and replaced with a 3 litre Mercedes-Benz OM 606 TD unit (with a low 70,000 miles recorded), mated to a 6-speed manual Mercedes-Benz gearbox, new flywheel and clutch. A custom-made stainless exhaust is fitted, as is an intercooler system with custom aluminium radiator and twin electric fans to keep things cool. Power and running is improved with a new 7.5 mm Dieselmeken pump and hybrid turbo, and all new ancillaries. All running gear was restored with new components such as springs, shock absorbers, and bushes. The braking has been improved with larger W126 front discs, and new lines. A replacement fuel tank has been fitted, as have new fuel lines. The original speedometer is fitted still, with a rare factory rev. counter, also a Speedhut GPS unit and Sony double DIN Bluetooth Apple Play stereo. With a 500SL rear axle and high ratio differential, the TE is geared for a top speed of 140 mph, with 70mph at a comfortable 2,000 rpm.
Finished in Nordic Blue metallic with a dark blue leather interior, to complete the look banded steel rims with Maxxis tyres sit on each corner, and the interior was treated to a new headlining.
Now both MoT and tax exempt, this street sleeper is like nothing else on the road. Subtle and almost innocuous, this modest-looking estate car can give many more overtly sporty cars a run for their money. If you like fast wagons, this nicely built example surely merits closer inspection.
