the sides with lobed panels, each decorated with alternating long stems of peony and camellia blooms, within borders of leafy scrolls, the canted shoulders with a band of pendent lappets below a formal scroll

The shape of present vessel was based on a 13th-century Islamic metal prototype, first adapted by Chinese potters in the 15th century.
For the Ming prototype of this blue and white vase, compare the ewer illustrated by John Alexander Pope in Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, The Freer Gallery, Washington, 1966, pl. 54 (lower right), and another example sold in these Rooms, 31 October 1994, lot 548A.
A number of vases of this design were produced during the Qianlong period, including one illustrated by Suzanne G. Valenstein in A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1975, pl. 159; one included in the Hong Kong Museum of Art exhibition Chinese Ceramics: The S. C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, 1987, and illustrated in the catalogue, no. 60; and another in the National Palace Museum, illustrated in Blue-and-White Ware of the Ch’ing Dynasty, 1967, pl. 4.
Qianlong vases of this size and pattern are illustrated by Michael Vickers, Oliver Impey and James Allan in From Silver to Ceramics, pl. 50, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch’ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, pl. 8; and in Chinese Porcelain: The S.
