A VERY FINE PAIR OF CHINESE GOUACHE AND WATERCOLOUR PAINTINGS ON PAPER

heightened in gum arabic, with village scenes from along the Pearl River, one with fishermen families and their moored boats, the other with flowering branches being sorted, with a figure smoking a pipe seated beside a staircase in the foreground
Total measurements of frames 42.5cm x 36cm. Each framed and glazed with UV protection glass.
NOTE: Other pieces from this very album were included by Marchant in their catalogue of Recent Acquisitions, 2008, no. 21, pp. 44-53.
This pair of paintings come from a complete album of 49 leaves and were painted before 15th December 1856. The album came with a German inscription which stated it was from Looling Hong, Shanghai, March 1861, and with a further description “given as a gift in Dortmund, Germany, December 1935.”
Copies of both these dedications are on the back of one of these frames.
