Audi’s high performance RS line originated with the B4-based, Porsche-developed RS2 Avant of 1994. After RS2 production stopped in 1995, it was another four years until another RS-badged Audi broke cover, that car being the B5-based RS4 unveiled at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. Audi launched their third iteration of the RS line at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2002, the new RS6 being based on Audi’s mid-range C5 platform. This new RS was the first RS-badged Audi to be offered both as an estate and a saloon, and with a Tiptronic-style automated-manual gearbox. Engine-work was outsourced to Cosworth Engineering; with twin KKK K04 turbochargers, variable inlet valve timing, Bosch Motronic engine management and sequential fuel-injection the RS6 pumped out a formidable 444bhp and a mighty 413lb-ft of torque.

Cosmetically, the RS6 differed to the S6 on account of its front bumper assembly, rear apron, deep side skirts and doors without moulded lower sections. The interior look was completed with leather Recaro seats and door inserts, a roof lining trimmed in alcantara suede, and aluminium inserts throughout. The standard specification was impressive, with satellite navigation, air-conditioning, electric mirrors, electric windows and a high end Bose audio system. With a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed in de-restricted form in excess of 180mph, this was a serious performance car. RS6 production lasted from July 2002 to September 2004, with over 8000 built.

One of 271 RS6 saloons imported to the UK, this original example was registered on 1st January 2003, finished in Avus Silver with a Black leather interior. Originally used by supplying dealer Robinsons Motor Company (now Norwich Audi) as their demonstrator (from January to March 2003), the RS6 was subsequently purchased by our vendor’s mother in law for the sum of £58,000. Driven regularly until 2014, the Audi was subsequently garage-stored until 2021, at which point, and with 46,800 miles recorded, ownership passed to the current vendor.

Our vendor, the owner of a classic engineering business, recommissioned the RS6 and pressed it into regular usage, servicing and maintaining the Audi as required. The only modifications to the car are replacement of the complicated Dynamic Ride Control dampers with more straightforward Koni adjustable dampers, and fitting of a new dash-mounted radio antenna. We understand the timing belt was replaced in 2021, new tyres, front discs and pads fitted in 2023, and the filters recently changed. The vendor advises us that the alcantara headlining has sagged (a common issue with) but a straightforward job for a competent trimmer to rectify.

A genuine one family owned car, in an attractive colour combination, this handsome bahnstormer offers excellent value in the current marketplace.
