Introduced in 1985 as a replacement for the aging Mulsanne Range, the Turbo R (the R standing for ‘Roadholding’) was described by the Motoring Press as ‘The first Bentley for decades worthy of carrying the name. Initially fitted with the turbocharged engine from the Mulsanne, a more modern fuel injected V8 later provided more torque, combined with tuned suspension and wider  wheels further enhance both ride and handling.

Performance is brisk, even with a nigh-on four-tonne kerbweight, thanks to an estimated power output of around 400bhp and 486lb/ft of torque. Because the Bentley Turbo R is unlike previous and, some might argue, subsequent models, more about how the car goes about its business rather than the comfort of its occupants. The Turbo R was always the car of choice for the enthusiastic owner; while plutocrats and oligarchs chose to sit in the back of a Rolls-Royce, cads, bounders, and self-made men piloted their Bentley Turbo R themselves.
