A FINE CHINESE BLANC DE CHINE INCENSE BURNER
LATE MING DYNASTY, CIRCA 1640, DEHUA KILNS, FUJIAN PROVINCE
明 德化狮耳炉一件
约1640年
with rounded sides and flared, flattened rim, modelled with two high-relief Buddhist lion mask handles, surrounded by a mane of curls, all on a slightly splayed and lipped footrim, covered overall in a rich and even cream glaze. The underside with a two-character impressed sealmark an zhi within a recessed square.

PROVENANCE: From a private French collection
NOTE: An identical censer with the same mark from the collection of Captain J. Meuldijk, The Netherlands, was included by Marchant in their exhibition of Blanc de Chine, 2014, no. 87, p. 115.
Two related censers were included by Marchant in their exhibition of Blanc de Chine, 1985, nos. 26 & 27, p. 20.
Another, similar censer, with an zhi mark, is illustrated by Rose Kerr & John Ayers in Blanc de Chine, Porcelain from Dehua, a Catalogue of the Hickley Collection, Singapore, now in the Asian Civilisations Museum, no. 72.
The mark, an zhi, is illustrated and discussed by P.J. Donnelly in Blanc de Chine, Potter’s Marks, F.8.g, p. 360, where the author mentions a similar piece in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, USA.
