The first project of BMW Technik, a cutting edge engineering department created to develop concept cars and new technologies, the Z1 was actually intended only to be a suspension test mule for the upcoming E36. The new multilink rear suspension improved its handling and grip, especially on twisty roads.

But the public reaction was so great that it was pressed into production. Launched at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Harm Lagaay-designed model shocked the automotive world with its unique styling and distinctive features. With “Z” standing for Zukunft—or “future”—the Z1 was a car like no other. Not only did it boast wild details such as doors that retracted into the sills (which can be left down when driving, creating an open-air experience like no other), the car also featured cutting-edge production techniques, including composite body panels that could be changed in a matter of minutes. The Z1 received the classic 2.5 litre M20 inline-six engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and, although its performance figures were modest by modern standards, with a 0-60 mph time of 8 seconds and a top speed at around 140 mph, this lightweight (1,250 kg) sports car felt nimble and quick. The model became the basis of the Z Series that later expanded to include the Z3, Z4, and Z8.

Manufactured in April 1989, this early example was privately imported into the UK and registered with the DVLA in August of the same year. The Z1 was specified in Traum Schwartz (Dream Black) with a nicely complementing grey and camouflage-patterned Nubuck leather interior, and black convertible roof. Factory equipment includes electrically operated windows and doors, basic heating and ventilation controls, the original (and rare) Z1-branded radio/cassette player, and correct 16” inch alloy wheels. The car’s original spare wheel, toolkit, warning triangle, locking wheel nuts, and spare keys are also present.

Looking into the accompanying history folder, we find a comprehensive file of documentation, such as previous MoT receipts, previous invoices, a reprinted handbook and original Z1 press release. The Z1 has been serviced in the last year with timing belt and an oil service, and we understand drives very well with no known faults. Now showing a sensible 61,000 miles recorded, we understand the paintwork presents very nicely, whilst the interior shows light signs of use commensurate with its age and mileage.  A stylish modern classic and a milestone in BMW’s history, this engaging early Z1 would make a distinctive addition to any considered collection.
