1974 Triumph TR6
Registration Number: UPJ 318M
Chassis Number: CR54320
Engine Number: CR003323HE
Recorded Mileage: 7,321 miles (since rebuild)
Introduced in 1968, the Triumph TR6 represented the final and most refined evolution of the classic TR series — a quintessential British sports car admired for its muscular styling, robust six-cylinder performance, and engaging driving character. Styled by Karmann of Germany, the TR6 combined the mechanical spirit of earlier Triumphs with sharper, more modern lines, quickly becoming one of the marque’s most successful models.
Powered by Triumph’s 2.5-litre straight-six engine, the TR6 delivered around 125bhp in its UK-specification CR form, paired here with the desirable overdrive gearbox for relaxed cruising and spirited performance alike. With its distinctive exhaust note, ample torque, and rear-wheel-drive balance, the TR6 continues to offer an authentic analogue driving experience that captures the essence of 1970s British motoring.
This 1974 example is a UK-market CR model equipped with overdrive and accompanied by a good history file with records dating back to new, documenting consistent maintenance. While invoices for the repaint and engine rebuild are not present, there is clear evidence of substantial work completed, our vendor advises the car was subject to an engine rebuild at 92,000 miles. Accompanying documents detail a fully balanced engine, lightened and refaced flywheel, 244R camshaft with Vernier gear, and aluminium rocker box, along with specified valve clearances. A performance-oriented rebuild carried out to a high standard. The odometer now shows 7,321 miles which we’re advised is the mileage since the engine rebuild.
Recent years have seen further thoughtful improvements, including the fitment of electronic ignition and an electric cooling fan upgrade, enhancing reliability and everyday usability.
In December 2022, the TR6 was entrusted to renowned marque specialists Revington TR to address irregular running. Their inspection revealed that the fuel metering unit had not been calibrated to suit the high-lift camshaft; this was corrected with new parts and professional tuning, transforming the car’s performance and drivability.
The car has been in its current ownership since November 2021, covering around 1,000 miles in that time. It is reported to be mechanically very sound, with strong oil pressure, no smoke, and no suspension noise. Structurally, it is equally solid, having received professional attention to the underside, including new welding and a replacement rear chassis member.
Well-maintained and in good mechanical order, this TR6 represents a great opportunity to acquire a handsome and engaging example of Triumph’s classic 1970s roadster, ready to be driven and enjoyed.
