Launched in 1997, the Triumph 900 Thunderbird Sport proved to be an extremely popular bike. The Thunderbird had everything, retro looks, style, performance, charm and a gorgeous sound from the twin piggyback megafone-style exhausts. Polished fins on the cylinders gave the impression of a 1970s air-cooled engine, but in fact it was liquid cooled. The bike was the sports version of Triumph's top selling 900 Thunderbird. The styling of the Triumph Thunderbird Sport was reminiscent of Triumph’s X75 Hurricane, a 1970s icon.

The engine, a 885cc inline triple, with twin overhead chain-driven cams and four valves per cylinder, produced a respectable 82 bhp, 14 bhp more than its stablemate, the Thunderbird. The sports version also had twin front discs on 17" wheels with firmer suspension, which gave great stopping power and handling.
