JAR
Joseph Arthur Rosenthal, known as JAR has become one of the finest contemporary jewellery designers of the 21st Century.
JAR worked at Bulgari in New York in 1977 and then returned to Paris where he opened his own workshop and jewellery store with his partner Pierre Jeannet. His pave set jewels incorporated various coloured gemstones which stand out against the dark metal alloys that he uses to create breathtaking jewellery.
In 2013, his creativity and craftsmanship were honoured with a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum, New York. He was the first living ‘artist of gems’ to be honoured with a retrospective.
In 2002 JAR exhibited at Somerset House, London. The exhibition was an enormous success. 145 pairs of ‘Pansy’ earrings, made of aluminium were sent, by JAR, to the clients who had leant pieces to the show as a thank you. A further 1,000 pairs were made for sale at the exhibition. Visitors snapped them up within days. Other pieces that were made for sale were ‘Geranium’, Ivy’ and Violet earrings.
Each of the earrings show wear around the edges of each of the petals, which on a a couple of the petals on each of the earrings encroach onto the petal itself. wear is easily visible with 10x loupe, less so with naked eye.
