Specialist engine manufacture Harry Westlake had developed a special cylinder head containing two valves instead of the traditional two, introduced into his 500cc Speedway and Grasstrack engines. The series had been dominated by the Czech company Jawa, but with the with the introduction of the new cylinder heads, the Jawa engines were left at a huge disadvantage. In later years, as the race for power raged, Jawa ended Westlakes domination by bringing out twin overhead camshafts, Westlake fought back by developing his own DOHC cylinder head.
RTS was a market leader in the building and development of motorcycle racing frames, building their first frame in 1979 and soon becoming a major contender on the track. The company still produce motorcycle frames and products today in their Gloucestershire works.
