AN EARLY UMPIRE'S WHISTLE, C.1880 Made of horn and boxwood with two cork "peas". A similar whistle is recorded by the Australian Football League as being the very first umpire's whistle - as apposed to umpires using vocal commands - used to referee Australian Football in 1886.
