A JIAN 'OIL-SPOT' BOWL
SONG DYNASTY, 12/13TH CENTURY
建窑油滴盏 宋
with deep conical sides, the interior and exterior covered with a lustrous dark brown glaze suffused with silvery black streaks, the glaze ending irregularly around the foot to expose a dark grey stoneware body.

NOTE: Oil-spot tea bowls were initially produced in the Jian kilns by decreasing the temperature during firing while the glazes were still boiling. This had the effect of fixing iron-rich spots before they ran down as streaks. As the spots crystallised as magnetite, the spots took on a silvery sheen. This effect was copied in the North of China in the Song and Jin periods by applying iron-rich slip beneath standard black glazes.
