of baluster square-form with twin Buddhist lion mask handles in lapis-blue, finely painted with a figure on a donkey beside verdant mountains, the reverse with two cranes perched in a pine tree, bears inscription 'Walking alone on the back of a donkey, the cloud and green mountains approaching nearer, made by Xuělì Chéngmén, in the 9th month, autumn of the year ren-wu (1882)'

PROVENANCE: Private West Country Collection, inherited from the owners Grandfather in the early 1980's.
NOTE: Cheng Men was a porcelain painting master active during the late Qing dynasty. He practiced in the qianjiang enamelling style, which is characterised by its use of a restrained palette in pale washes, giving the porcelains painted in this style the look of watercolours. This style is said to be based on literati painting, and was popular during the late Qing and early Republic periods.
