painted on the exterior with five circular medallions of river landscapes with a fishing boat moored beneath a willow tree; a viewing pavilion beneath an overhanging branch; a house on a rocky promontory; a distant viewing pavilion beneath the moon and birds in flight with a further pavilion, beneath a stylised flowerhead band and above a blue ground lappet band

PROVENANCE: From the collection of Captain Michael Hatcher, sold by Christie’s Amsterdam in their auction of Fine and Important Late Ming and Transitional Porcelain, the second and final part of the Hatcher Collection, recently recovered from an Asian vessel in the South China Sea, 12th-13th June 1984.
This bowl was salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher and is from the Hatcher Cargo which sank in 1642; a similar example is illustrated by Colin Sheaf and Richard Kilburn in The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes, pl. 53.
