Designer by Edward Turner, following the success of his 500cc Speed Twin, Turner set about seeing that potential realised. As Chief Designer of Triump, improvements over the Speed Twin included forged alloy pistons and a larger fuel tank with detachable silencers. The finished bike was ready for production in 1939 and christened the Tiger 100, the 100 standing for 100 mph.
Post-war the Tiger was developed further with telescopic front forks and, from 1954, swing-arm rear suspension. The Tiger was Triumph’s foremost sports offering and it built up a prolific competition record for itself as the decade wore on. As Triumph began the practice across its range of constructing its engines and gearboxes in one unit, the Tiger became a ‘unit’ bike from 1959.
This later 1968 490cc Tiger has been restored in the last few years, having been in storage recently. Offered with V5C and dating letter, and in need of light recommissioning, this is a clean example of a classic British bike of the 1960s.
