Wendy Ramshaw CBE, RDI 1939-2018
Wendy Ramshaw’s work is original and mind blowing. Her jewellery was made be worn but also becomes a sculpture whilst not worn as represented with the group of rings on they acrylic stand. Her jewels also incorporated numerous ways in which it could be worn. Her work is on display worldwide. The Victorian & Albert Museum, London; British Museum, London; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto are just a few of the 70 plus public Collections that include her work.
She began her studies in 1956 in fabric design at Newcastle’s College of Art and then went onto Reading University where she met her partner, David Watkins. When Wendy began to design ‘self-assembly’ paper jewellery she was spotted by the fashion designer Mary Quant, who went on to stock her work the early 1960’s.
Wendy’s work has been recognised as of immense importance in modern British Jewellery design and her work and contribution was celebrated as early as 1982 in a retrospective at the Victorian & Albert Museum, London.
Lovely set.
There are a few abrasions to each of the edges of the stand where the two sections are screwed together.
The stones are all bright and lively with characteristic inclusions. One oval citrine cabochon, one oval amethyst cabochon and one circular garnet cabochon have numerous characteristic inclusions with chips to the surface.
Mounts are in good condition, but he stem of the pear-cut garnet ring is bent.
Sadly one gold band lacking a gemstone, showing that it has broken off.
All bands are hallmarked.
The stand closes and tightens properly when all the rings are stacked.
