A FIRST WORLD WAR 9CT GOLD CASED POCKET WATCH, presented to Victoria Cross recipient Wilfred Fuller, engraved to the reverse ‘Cpl W D Fuller, VC, From The Officers NCO’s and men 1st Batt Grenadier Guards, 31st October, 1916’, together with a group of explanatory paperwork including reproduction images of Fuller showing his award to fellow members of the regiment at Buckingham Palace.
On March 12th, 1915, Lance Corporal Fuller was fighting in the trenches at Neuve Chapelle when he saw an enemy party trying to escape along a communications trench. He advanced and killed the leading man with a ‘bomb’ at which point almost fifty other enemy soldiers surrendered to him. He was completely alone at the time. He was awarded the VC by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 4th June 1915.
He died aged 54 on November 22nd 1947 and is buried at Christ Church, Frome.
