A RARE CHINESE PORCELAIN WUCAI, KO-AKAI, SQUARE SWEETMEAT DISH, MUKOZUKE
MING DYNASTY, TIANQI (1621-1627)

with indented chamfered corners, painted in the centre with an iron-red, yellow-breasted bird perched amongst flowering peony, the branch in aubergine, the leaves in green and the flower in iron-red, above rockwork, encircled by eight lotus flowers, amongst scrolling branches on the flat everted rim.

NOTE: An identical dish from this set is illustrated by Herbert Butz and Kawahara Masahiko in Chinese Porcelain of the Seventeenth Century Made for Japan, from the collection of Georg Weishaupt, no. 45, pp. 82/3 and was exhibited at the Asiatische Kunst Museum, Berlin, 1996-1997.
A similar set of five was included by Christie’s London in their auction of The Peony Pavilion Collection; Chinese Tea Ceramics for Japan, circa 1580-1650, 12th June 1989, lot 382, p. 110.
