Aermacchi is a household name among motorcyclists thanks to its heroic achievement of producing the most highly developed and successful overhead-valve racing single ever made: the 'Ala d'Oro' (Golden Wing). Alberto Pagani's 9th place on the 250's Dutch TT debut in 1960 demonstrated the bike's potential, which was confirmed the following week when Pagani finished 5th at the Belgian Grand Prix. The Aermacchi single was outstandingly successful at national level and today, having benefited from another four decades of development, remains a competitive force in historic motorcycle racing. Weighing in at just 95kg and revving to more than 8000 rpm, the Ala d’Oro is a pure track bike.

The vast majority of the 74 examples built between 1967 and 1972 went to club level racers, although a handful were raced by the factory, including one that came third in the 1968 350cc World Championship ridden by Kelvin Carruthers. Aermacchi produced the most highly developed and successful overhead valve racing 250 single ever made.

This ultra -short stroke ex works bike, bike number two of a total of five, was supplied originally to dealer Monty and Ward, purchased by Martin Ashwood, who in turn passed the bike to Dennis Batchelor, who rode it with great success. The specification is based on a single cylinder 249cc four-stroke OHV engine, with a very short bore/stroke of 74mm x 58mm, and four speed transmission with dry clutch. Offered from a private collection of race bikes, this fully prepared and race ready machine is an exciting proposition for the historic racer.
