A first for Porsche, the new watercooled 996 Turbo was launched in 2000, with four-wheel-drive and a 3.6-litre, twin turbocharged and intercooled flat-six producing 420bhp. The turbo engine can trace its ancestry back to the original air-cooled units of the 1970s, being directly related not only to the 996 GT3 but also the GT1 homologation racers of the late 1990s. Newly confident and flush after the success of the 986 Boxster and the 993 and 996 versions of the 911, Porsche sought to apply its latest thinking to the Turbo. Although the new Turbo offered only a little more power than the 993-based car, the new model was cleaner, quieter and more advanced. The 996 Turbo took European Car of the Year in 2000, earning a place amongst Porsche’s greatest efforts. Fitted with an X50 power kit delivering 444bhp, the 996 Turbo nudged towards 200mph for those brave enough to dare, delivering astonishing performance with impressive levels of comfort and civility. From 2004 the X50 option was incorporated into the newly launched Turbo S model.

This fabulous low mileage 2004 Porsche 996 Turbo Cabriolet was acquired by our vendor in 2007. Finished in special order Polar Silver with a Metropole Blue leather interior, this well specified example was fitted with the (444 bhp) X50 performance pack from new, mated to the desirable 6-speed manual gearbox. Further features include body-coloured sports seat backrests and steering wheel, factory hardtop with Porsche cover, and full-sized Porsche car cover

In the intervening years the Turbo has covered a mere c.18,500 miles from new, being stored carefully when not in use in a Carcoon. The Porsche has benefitted from a detail and ceramic coating prior to sale, also a report to confirm an even and consistent factory paint finish on all panels. We understand the vendor, now in his 80s, has finally decided to downsize his car collection, hence the 996 coming to us for sale.

Described by Porsche technicians as “the best we’d ever seen” when last serviced, this genuine investment-grade Turbo must surely rank amongst the finest examples in the country.
