LIEUTENANT COLONEL J.C. MURRAY COWELL, Victorian Officers Sword by Henry Wilkinson of Pall Mall, the brass scabbard engraved 'The Sword of J.C. Murray Cowell, Lieut. Colonel in the Coldstream Guards. It was In His Hand at Inkermann Where He Fell Leading Three Companies of His Own Regiment and a Portion of the 41st in One of The Last Successful Attacks On The Russian Columns' with a similar dated acid etched inscription along the spine of the blade. 99 cms long. NB. Lieutenant Colonel James Charles Murray was killed at Inkermann (The Crimean War) on 5th November 1854. He was for some years the page of honour for King William IV and Queen Victoria. He lies buried on Cathcart's Hill near Sebastopol with seven other officers. This is also the sword featured in the portrait of the Colonel in this sale. EX. Fingask Castle Rait Sale, 1993.
