A PAIR OF NEWTON'S NEW & IMPROVED TERRESTRIAL & CELESTIAL 16 INCH LIBRARY GLOBES ON STANDS, circa 1867, both on mahogany tripod stands with carved scrolling acanthus down swept legs terminating in claw feet on brass casters, the globes measuring 60 cm diameter and standing 105 cm high

Provenance: These globes were originally owned by Alexander Scriminger, a stockbroker, based in Highgate in the 1860s.  He moved to Wispers House, built in 1875 , and then to Woolhouse Farm at Wispers in 1897, where the globes passed into the ownership of his daughter Ruth, and have subsequently been passed down through the family, and the globes have remained there until the present day, and are presented in untouched country house condition
Alexander Scriminger and his 7 children lived at Woodside, Highgate; born from 1850 - 1872.  He built Wispers House, Stedham in 1875 and moved there.  He gave Woolhouse Farm to his daughter, Ruth, in 1897 where she kept a schoolroom up to 1930s.  Woolhouse farm was bought in 1872.
