JACOB EPSTEIN: YOUNG PORTRAIT BUST OF A GIRL named ‘Piccaninny’ by the artist (1940), mounted on a stepped marble base, dark green patination, unsigned.
29 cms including base
PROVENANCE: The owners Aunt was a friend of Kitty Garman, one of Epstein’s daughters at the time of Kitty’s marriage to Lucian Freud. The owner’s aunt attested to being given the bust as a wedding present which was described by Kitty at the time as ‘being one of her father’s (Epstein) pieces’. This example appears to be a variant and may account for it being unsigned.
We use the word 'variant' because editions of this bronze do seem to have some subtle differences. This one for instance, doesn't have a curl of hair on the right hand side of the forehead but it can clearly be seen in others that have been sold in the past.
