Although it may sound exotic, Velocette began in the more prosaic setting of Hall Green, Birmingham in 1904, when Johannes Gutgemann began manufacturing small capacity motorcycles (he subsequently changed his surname to Goodman). By 1913 a two-stroke machine called ‘Velocette’ was produced. The company liked the name and stuck with it.
In 1933 Velocette developed the four-stroke M series, later with a 347cc high-camshaft pushrod engine fitted with a short rocker arm to reduce vibration. The 350 MAC was born. This newly developed engine reached a respectable top speed of 75 mph through its four-speed gearbox. It proved to be very popular as a straightforward, smooth, slimline single-cylinder touring machine.
By 1947 Velocette had turned to racing, taking the first four places at the Isle of Man TT Races in the junior class. In 1949, Velocette were the first FIM World Champions in the 350 class, taking the title once more the following year. In 1948 improvements to the road-going MAC were made, including air-sprung Dowty Oleomatic front forks, 19-inch wheels and improved brakes. Over the years, the MAC engine power was improved to 15bhp increasing the compression ratio to 6.75. 1953 saw major improvements, including an adjustable rear suspension, improved frame from Reynolds 531 tubing, increased wheelbase, and a raised seat height. In 1960, production of the MAC came to an end.
This 1960 MAC underwent a complete and full restoration to a very high standard in 2003, and has completed just 2,784 miles since. A comprehensive history file is supplied with the bike, as is a period top box. The vendor tells us the MAC is easy to start, the electrics work, and the bike runs well with a dry sump. Sorted and ready for shows and summer riding.
