Speedway as a sport that has evolved over the last 100 years, with brave souls riding high-powered 500cc engines fuelled by methanol, with just one fixed gear and no brakes. Using a countershaft transmission and 3 spring centrifugal clutch, speedway bikes can rocket off the line at a speed which would embarrass a period grand prix car.

The secret would be to slam into the first corner with a hard broadside and countersteer the slide while using the engines power to control the slide on each corner, while reaching speeds of over 80mph. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Czech company Jawa emerged in the 1960s as being one of the market leaders in building both engines and frames.
