Facing stiff competition from Mazda, and with Porsche, BMW and Audi planning their own small two-seater sportscar, the team at Mercedes-Benz set out to create a new compact roadster to slot below the contemporary R129 SL. By late 1991, under Bruno Sacco, the first design sketches were drawn, with scale models being built in the first half of 1992. The revolutionary roof design consisted of a folding steel hardtop with both halves linked by a mechanism which locked securely when the roof was closed. At the touch of a button a hydraulic system controls the fully automatic folding process in which the boot lid is also integrated. Massively successful in its first year, worldwide sales hit 55,000, over double the entire nine-year production of 190 SLs; between 1996 and 2004 over 311,000 SLKs were sold. 

This beautifully facelifted example was registered in June 2001 in the channel island of Jersey. Supplied by local agent Jacksons, the SLK was specified with the more powerful 215bhp 3.2 litre engine, mated to a switchable five-speed automatic gearbox. Maintenance was originally undertaken by Jacksons, later passing to a local Mercedes-Benz specialist. 

The maintenance record is impressive, with a total of 18 stamps in the original service book, supporting just 44,000 well maintained miles from new. The most recent major service we understand was in the last 500 miles. 

Finished in Brilliant Silver with an Anthracite leather interior, the SLK is still fitted with an unused jack, toolkit, first aid kit and spare wheel. With all UK duties paid to enable UK mainland registration (the nova letter is in the history file as is the V55/5 form), the vendor is more than happy to assist with UK registration on an age-related number plate.

Offered with an MoT to May 2026, and presented in truly excellent condition in all respects, this super Mercedes-Benz is a highly usable modern classic which can be enjoyed all year round.
