A UNUSUAL JAPANESE GOLD LACQUER COMBINED WRITING BOX AND DOCUMENT BOX (SUZURIBAKO AND RYOSHIBAKO)
EDO PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY 
modelled as a koto (stringed instrument), with silver inlaid strings against a mokume ground, with chrysanthemum and plum blossom decoration in keuchi, the sides well worked with a key-fret pattern on a nashiji ground, the interior of the cover further decorated with a bird above plum blossom issuing from a straw-wrapped tree trunk, with a shishi form copper mizuire
