The son of William and Mary Roche of Youghal, in County Cork, Roche was born deaf. It’s thought he was a self-taught artist. By 1779 he had established himself in Dublin, and in the years following he worked in England. In 1786 he lived in Cork where he married a distant cousin. In 1792 the couple moved to Bath, where his practice flourished. He also painted Royalty. Roche returned to the family home in County Waterford in 1822. He died there in 1847.
