A SILVER HANDLED DAGGER AND SCABBARD, TRICHINOPOLY INDIA C.1890. More generally known for smaller domestic items and silver jewellery, the city of Tiruchirappalli, (Trichinopoly in english) has a justified high reputation for its very singular style of decoration. Both the handle and the scabbard of the dagger are densely chased all over with the flora, fauna and deities typical of the silversmithing from the city. The pommel is formed as a stylised mask with green gem set eyes.
